Just like humans, a pet’s recovery post-surgery can be an unpleasant experience, but there are a few things you can do to make them a little more comfortable until they are feeling their best again.
Follow the Post-Op Instructions Provided by Your Vet
No matter which type of surgery your pet has undergone, your veterinary surgeon will provide you with clear and specific instructions on how to care for them following the operation. It is important that you follow these instructions carefully as there may be specific and important directions that relate to the type of surgery your pet has had.
Manage Their Pain
After the procedure, your vet will explain the medications prescribed to manage your pet’s post-surgery pain. This will include the dose required, how frequently it’s needed and how to administer the medication. In addition to pain medication, antibiotics may also be prescribed to prevent infection. If your pet is anxious or highly-strung your vet may also prescribe a sedative to help them relax while they are recovering.
Offer a Light Meal
General anaesthetic may cause your furry friend to feel a bit ‘off’ and lose their appetite. When it’s time to feed your dog after surgery, offer a lighter meal than usual (1/4 or 1/2 of the amount that they would regularly consume). You can expect your pet to regain their appetite within about 24 hours. Feeding your pet a nutritious diet is not just important while they are recovering, it is also important they eat well on a day to day basis. Proper nutrition is key to maintaining an optimal level of overall health. Also ensure your pet has plenty of fresh water at all times.

Keep Them Comfortable
After surgery it is important to provide your pet with a comfortable and quiet place to rest, away from children and other pets. Provide a soft and warm bed for them to cosy into and make sure it is large enough for them to stretch out so there’s no added pressure on any bandaged or sensitive areas.
Care for Their Wound
During the post-op period (around 10 to 14 days) the wound must be kept clean and dry. Check bandages, casts, and sutures daily and don’t bath your pet or let them swim. Also check the wound for excessive swelling, discharge, gaping or bleeding. If you have any concerns please contact your vet immediately.
If your pet licks or chews their stitches, this may cause harm and in some cases infection. An Elizabethan collar is a bucket-like device that is worn around the neck, it is great for preventing your pet from agitating their stitches or wound site.
Show Extra Love and Attention
Pets may become frustrated at the reduced level of activity or discomfort their wound following surgery, so it’s important to mentally stimulate your pet, keep them happy and provide loving reassurance. Rotate a selection of gentle games or toys that won’t encourage too much physical activity, ie stretching or jumping. Take some time out of your day to sit quietly with your pet, stroking their fur and talking to them calmly. This will help your little friend remain calm and ensure they feel loved.
