Whether you have a dog, cat, rabbit or another type of furry friend, the key to ensuring their ongoing health and happiness is to catch any health issues before they become serious – and the best way to do this is with a visit to a vet. Railway Avenue Veterinary Hospital has been providing high quality care for all kinds of pets in Armadale, Byford and Maddington for over 25 years. We are often asked how regularly a pet should visit us, so let’s have a look at how frequently you should visit the vet with your pet.

The Age of Your Pet

While the most common domestic pets are dogs and/or cats, vets are also experienced in examining all types of animals including, rabbits, guinea pigs, birds and even reptiles. Regardless of the pet you have, their age will be a determining factor in how often you should visit the vet.

Very young animals (kittens and puppies) – in the first year of your pet’s life, you’ll likely need to visit your Maddington vet at least three or four times. These visits will cover vaccinations, de-sexing and regular health checks to ensure they are growing and developing as they should. You can also discuss flea and heartworm prevention medications as well dietary requirements and even behavioural concerns.

Adult animals – pets from one year up to seven to ten (depending on their breed and size) are considered adults. An annual routine check-up is usually all that is required unless you have noticed anything you think should be checked out or needs attention. An annual visit will allow for a physical examination and provide time to discuss any questions you may have about their behaviour or nutrition.

Senior pets – pets older than seven years often require more care and attention for age-related issues. Pets age at a much faster rate than humans and as such, changes in health happen much quicker. Twice-yearly check-ups for senior pets are recommended as these will cover vaccinations and physical exams, as well as allow for blood and urine tests to detect common age-related diseases such as arthritis, diabetes, kidney disease, heart disease, thyroid problems and cancer.

The Importance of Routine Check-Ups

Whichever type of pet you have, a routine visit on an annual basis should be part of their regular care. This will ensure vaccinations are up-to-date, as well as ensure dental checks and physical check-ups are performed to keep your pet feeling their best. A yearly routine check-up with your Byford vet will give you the chance to mention any concerns you have about changes you’ve seen in your pet, making sure appropriate care is given to keep your pet healthy and living a long and happy life.
